Ayurveda is a system of traditional medicine that originated in India thousands of years ago.Ayurveda is made of two Sanskrit words."Ayus" means “life” and "veda" meas “the knowledge” or “science”.Ayurveda is more than just a medicine system,it is a science of life.According to the ancient ayurvedic scholar Charaka,Ayu is comprised of few essential parts.The Combination of mind,body,senses and the soul.

History of Ayurvedic Department from the beginning of Southern Provincial Council

Started as a Department administering under the Ministry of Health, Fisheries, Social Services, Tourism and Women Affairs of the Southern Provincial Council on 12.09.1989.

Joined to the Ministry of Health, Industries, Tourism, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs from 2000.

Functioning under the Chief Ministry since 2009.

Joined to the Ministry of Chief Minister, Education, Health and Indigenous Medicine in 1994.

Joined to the Ministry of Health, Social Welfare, Probation and Labor from 2004.
